What could have been a train wreck has actually gone very well for us here in Arab, Alabama.
The year started out wet, and I mean really wet. At one point there was a million gallons of water per second moving through the Guntersville Dam. I recall thinking that we might float off this mountain if the rain persisted. Little did I know that all of the rain and the problems that came with it were just minor issues compared to what was on the horizon for us.
February 13th, the day before Valentines Day
That was the day that a stretch of Highway 231 coming up and going down Brindley Mountain to Huntsville was closed due to cracking and sinking. What a disaster! A lot of our clients travel that highway to come and see us each year. The result, has been an additional 20 minutes drive time for everyone coming that route. Many clients are taking Hwy 431 to Guntersville and Hwy 69 to the office just to avoid the area altogether.
We have a lot of clients in Tennessee and Nashville in particular. The first week in March saw the worst devastation from tornadoes and storms ever, 24 people lost their lives. As a result the IRS and Treasury Department extended the tax filing deadline to July 15th for our clients affected by the storms and tornadoes.
Then we learned that panic spreads much faster than any pandemic…
Various rumors surrounding the Covid-19 Coronavirus Pandemic caused wide-spread panic at shopping centers and food stores. These pictures were taken at the Walmart Super Center in Boaz. The most peculiar buying frenzy revolved around toilet paper, of all things.
The Tax Filing Deadline is Extended from April 15th to July 15th
On March 20th Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin announced that Federal Income Tax filings and payments of any tax owed will be due on July 15th instead of the usual April 15th. We can get an Extension until October 15th for filing, but the tax must be paid by July 15th or interest and penalties will accrue from that date.
The same is true for the State of Alabama Individual tax returns. Amanda called the Alabama Department of Revenue and spoke with Nancy today who stated…
Everyone is granted an automatic extension of time to file their Alabama Individual Tax Returns until October 15th, however, payments are due by July 15th.
ADOR
We have certain functions that are performed by seasonal workers to help us process tax returns during the busy time. Those functions usually go away the day after the filing season ends. Extending the deadline does create its own set of problems for me and my business, but I’m working through it.
Another aspect to this filing deadline moving up 90 days is the fact that we cannot continue the extended work hours at night and on weekends. Our office hours will change to Monday through Thursday 9-5 on Monday April 20th.
So, we’re taking things a day at a time down here in Arab. We are maintaining our Tax Season Hours 8-8 M-F & 8-5 S for the time being.
