Following a disaster declaration by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the IRS has extended the deadline for filing various federal individual and business tax returns, as well as making tax payments, to May 1, 2025. This extension applies statewide, covering all 67 counties in Alabama, and is designed to ease the burden on those recovering from the storm’s widespread impact.

The relief covers a range of tax obligations originally due between September 22, 2024, and May 1, 2025.

Our week got off to a good start with this announcement.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="768" height="1024" src="https://cookco.us/news/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/GnnHQv1W4AALftK-768x1024.jpg" alt="Gregory J. Quarterly estimated income tax payments due on January 15 and April 15, 2025, and quarterly payroll and excise tax returns due on October 31, 2024, January 31, 2025, and April 30, 2025, are also postponed to May 1, 2025. However, tax payments for 2023 returns due on April 15, 2024, before the hurricane, are not eligible for this extension.

Taxpayers impacted by the disaster can also claim casualty losses on their federal income tax returns for either 2023 or 2024, using FEMA disaster declaration number 3618-EM.

The IRS is automatically providing this relief to those with an address of record in Alabama, meaning no additional paperwork or calls are required to qualify.
