The credit amounts and types of qualifying expenses were expanded by the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We&#8217;ll help you compare the credits and decide whether they apply to expenses you&#8217;ve already paid or will apply to improvements you&#8217;re planning for the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Who can claim the credits<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can claim either the Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit or the Residential Energy Clean Property Credit for the year when you make qualifying improvements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Homeowners who improve their&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/credits-deductions\/frequently-asked-questions-about-energy-efficient-home-improvements-and-residential-clean-energy-property-credits-qualifying-residence\">primary residence<\/a>&nbsp;will find the most opportunities to claim a credit for qualifying expenses. Renters may also be able to claim credits, as well as owners of second homes used as residences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The credits are never available for improvements made to homes that you don&#8217;t use as a residence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These expenses may qualify if they meet&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.energy.gov\/policy\/articles\/making-our-homes-more-efficient-clean-energy-tax-credits-consumers\">requirements detailed on energy.gov<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Exterior doors, windows, skylights and insulation materials<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Central air conditioners, water heaters, furnaces, boilers and heat pumps<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Biomass stoves and boilers<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Home energy audits<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The amount of the credit you can take is a percentage of the total improvement expenses in the year of installation:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>2022: 30%, up to a lifetime maximum of $500<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>2023 through 2032: 30%, up to a maximum of $1,200 (heat pumps, biomass stoves and boilers have a separate annual credit limit of $2,000), no lifetime limit<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Get details on the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/credits-deductions\/energy-efficient-home-improvement-credit\">Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Residential Clean Energy Credit<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These expenses may qualify if they meet&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.energy.gov\/policy\/articles\/making-our-homes-more-efficient-clean-energy-tax-credits-consumers\">requirements detailed on energy.gov<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Solar, wind and geothermal power generation<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Solar water heaters<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fuel cells<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Battery storage (beginning in 2023)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The amount of the credit you can take is a percentage of the total improvement expenses in the year of installation:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>2022 to 2032: 30%, no annual maximum or lifetime limit<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>2033: 26%, no annual maximum or lifetime limit<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>2034: 22%, no annual maximum or lifetime limit<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Get details on the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/credits-deductions\/residential-clean-energy-credit\">Residential Clean Energy Credit<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>If you make energy improvements to your home, tax credits are available for a portion of qualifying expenses.
