{"id":2085,"date":"2017-08-25T11:48:57","date_gmt":"2017-08-25T16:48:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cookco.us\/news\/?p=2085"},"modified":"2017-08-25T11:48:57","modified_gmt":"2017-08-25T16:48:57","slug":"job-search-expenses-can-be-tax-deductible","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cookco.us\/news\/job-search-expenses-can-be-tax-deductible\/","title":{"rendered":"Job Search Expenses Can be Tax Deductible"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Taxpayers who are looking for a new job that is in the same line of work may be able to deduct some job-hunting expenses on their federal income tax return, even if they don\u2019t get a new job.<\/p>\n<p>Here are some important facts to know about deducting costs related to job searches:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Same Occupation<\/strong> &#8211; Expenses are tax deductible when the job search is in a taxpayer\u2019s current line of work.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Resume Costs<\/strong> &#8211; Costs associated in preparing and mailing a resume are tax deductible.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Travel Expenses<\/strong> &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/taxtopics\/tc511.html\">Travel costs to look for a new job<\/a> are deductible. Expenses including transportation, meals and lodging are deductible if the trip is mainly to look for a new job. Some costs are still deductible even if looking for a job is not the main purpose of the trip.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Placement Agency<\/strong> &#8211; Job placement or employment agency fees are deductible.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Reimbursed Costs<\/strong> &#8211; If an employer or other party reimburses search related expenses, like agency fees, they are not deductible.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Report job search expenses on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/instructions\/i1040sca\/index.html\">Schedule A<\/a> of a 1040 tax return and claim them as miscellaneous deductions.
